To celebrate Archive Awareness Campaign, 2010, Archives & Records Association, Ireland are delighted to announce a public talk by Dr. Catherine Cox, BA MA PhD entitled 'A valuable and vulnerable resource: medical records and the historian'.
The talk will take place on Wednesday 15 September at 6.00pm at the Maxwell theatre, in the Hamilton Conference Centre, Trinity College. All are welcome to attend, no booking required.
Dr. Catherine Cox, UCD Director, Centre for the History of Medicine in Ireland specialises in eighteenth and ninteenth century medical history with a particular emphasis on Ireland. Special interests are the history of mental illness and the spread of 'medical knowledge' in eighteenth and nineteenth century society. Other areas of interest are the history of the the great famine; social and cultural history, women's history and the history of urban development in eighteenth and nineteenth century Ireland. THE FIRST WORLD WAR
Event 1: Letters from the Great War: An Exhibition
The First World War is now widely-recognized for its impact on the history of Ireland. This exhibition, drawn from the Royal Dublin Fusiliers Association Archive, is based largely on the Monica Roberts Collection of original letters written by soldiers from the Western Front, giving a vivid picture of their courage and good cheer in the face of appalling circumstances. The exhibition has been devised by Dublin City Library & Archive and will be hosted by the Kilmacud-Stillorgan Local History Society.

Event 2: Letters to Stillorgan from the Great War: a talk by Bryan MacMahon
In 1915, Monica Roberts set up a voluntary society The Band of Helpers to the Soldiers to provide gifts for Irish troops fighting in the Great War. These consisted of simple but essential items such as handkerchiefs, bootlaces, socks and tins of boracic ointment for sore feet. Many soldiers wrote to thank Monica Roberts and a correspondence developed, bringing the horrors of war vividly to her home in Stillorgan, Co. Dublin, as recounted in this talk by Bryan MacMahon.

DUBLIN'S SPORTING HERITAGE
Dublin City Sports Archive
Dublin City Library & Archive has established the Dublin City Sports Archive which aims to collect and preserve archive material from clubs, sporting organisations and individuals relating to Sport and the City. The Sports Archive will be launched to mark Dublin's term as European City of Sport, 2010.
Event 3: Sport and the City Seminar
A full-day seminar titled Sport and the City will take place in Dublin City Library & Archive, in association with the Sports History Ireland Association and the Sport & Recreation Unit, Dublin City Council. The seminar will celebrate Dublin's rich sporting heritage with talks on Maids of the Mountain Hockey Club; Dublin's historic playing fields and stadiums; Bohemians Football Club; the GAA and the Irish Revolution in Dublin; How Dublin saved hurling: the 1880s and the making of a modern game. Key-note speaker will be commentating legend Jimmy McGee whose talk is titled My life in Sport.

Event 4: Dublin City Sports Archive Launch
Following the Sport and the City Seminar, the Dublin City Sports Archive will be officially launched by Lord Mayor of Dublin, Gerry Breen at Dublin City Library & Archive. Special guest speaker will be Ronnie Delany, Ireland's Olympic Gold Medallist in 1500m in Melbourne in 1956.
A snooker cue from The Crucible, signed by 21 leading players including Ken Doherty, Stephen Hendry and Ronnie O'Sullivan will also be on display.

Event 5: Anna Manahan Remembered: An Exhibition
Leading, Irish actress Anna Manahan is being honoured by a special exhibition to commemorate her life-long contribution to Irish Theatre. Curated by Dublin City Archives, the exhibition will be on loan to Waterford City Library for the month of September. It consists of a series of striking photographs which reflect on Anna's stage and screen career which spanned over sixty years. It includes images from her Tony award winning roll in the Druid Production of The Beauty Queen of Leenane

Event 7: Christopher Casson: First Gentleman of the Irish Stage: An Exhibition
The papers of accomplished Irish actor Christopher Casson (1912-1996) were donated in 2009 to the Irish Theatre Archive at Dublin City Library & Archive.
To mark the transfer of these papers, a special exhibition has been created to celebrate the life and career of Christopher Casson. Best known to television audiences as Canon Browne in the long running series The Riordans, Christopher was also a noted harpist, ballad singer, visual artist, and a person of great intellect and spirituality. The exhibition explores all aspect of his character through a display of letters, spiritual writings, paintings and photographs- which include images of his celebrated parents, the actors Dame Sybil Thorndike and Sir Lewis Casson.

Event 9: The Art of Conservation: The Dublin City Charters: An Exhibition
Dublin City Council holds a splendid series of 102 charters dating from 1171-1727, which were presented by English monarchs from Henry II to George II. These documents are written on parchment and contain grants of rights, privileges and property to the citizens of Dublin. Dublin City Archives has initiated a preservation management project for the Dublin City Charters, in association with the Paper Conservation Studios. This photographic exhibition describes this project, whose aim is to prepare individually-tailored archival-quality portfolios enhancing the viability of these unique heritage documents.
